# Create a project

Create a project and set its location, defaults, codes, and access.

***

## Open the New Project modal

From the Projects list, select the **+** button (bottom-right of the screen), then select **New Project**.

> 📸 **Screenshot — New Project modal** The **New Project** modal open on the Project Details section, showing the section list on the left (Project Details, Applicable Codes, Access) and the fields on the right. Capture the **Create** button in the footer.

***

## Required fields

The **Create** button stays disabled until all required fields are valid.

### Project Details

**Project Name** — Free-text. Required.

**Building Type** — Select from the available building types. Required.

**Location** — Use the embedded map to set the project location. Search by address, city, or postal code, then select a result to pin it. The city, state, county, and postal code are captured from the selected location and used for building-code resolution; the postal code also resolves the project's climate zone automatically. Required.

**Size** — Total conditioned area in square feet (ft²). Optional. If entered, must be greater than 0.

> 📸 **Screenshot — Location map** The Project Details section with the map showing a pinned location after a search, so users see how the address search and pin work.

### Access

By default, the user who creates the project is added as its admin. Add additional users by selecting them from the user list. See [Project Settings](/workflows/projects/project-settings.md) for access levels.

## Applicable Codes (optional)

The **Applicable Codes** section lets you assign the project's **Plumbing** code — **IPC 2024** or **UPC 2024**. This isn't required to create the project, but a plumbing code must be assigned before you can add fixtures in the [Plumbing](/workflows/plumbing-planning/plumbing-planning-overview.md) discipline. You can set or change it later in [Project Settings](/workflows/projects/project-settings.md).

> Only the plumbing code is selectable at this stage. Building, energy, mechanical, and electrical code selects are not yet active.

***

## After creation

You'll see a **"Project created successfully"** confirmation. The new project appears in your **All** projects list. Select it to open the design environment and begin building out your spaces.

***

## Notes

* The **reference weather station** for climate-based assumptions is derived automatically from the project location; it is not a field you set in the current create modal.
* Automatic building-code cascade (location → jurisdiction → applicable code defaults) is not yet implemented. Set applicable codes manually until this ships.
* Mechanical load-density assumptions are not set here. They live per space type in the project's basis of design — see [Loads and Densities](/workflows/mechanical-planning/loads-and-densities.md).
