# Copy and clone spaces

Reuse spaces across floors and disciplines with copy, paste, and clone.

A space program drawn for one discipline is usually most of the program for the next. Strata gives you two ways to reuse it: **copy and paste** for a selection, and **Clone Spaces** for a whole discipline at once.

Both work across disciplines, and both are undoable.

## Copy and paste a selection

Select one or more spaces, copy them, then switch to wherever you want them and paste.

| Action      | Shortcut   | Also available from                              |
| ----------- | ---------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Copy Spaces | `Ctrl + C` | Action bar, and (≡) → **Edit** → **Copy Spaces** |
| Paste       | `Ctrl + V` | Action bar, and (≡) → **Edit**                   |

Only spaces are copied. Zones, sources, and water services in your selection are ignored — copy the spaces and rebuild the grouping in the target discipline.

The paste action names what's waiting, for example **Paste 12 Spaces**.

## Where pasted spaces land

Paste always targets the floor and discipline you're currently on.

* **Same floor, same discipline** — the copies are offset slightly from the originals so they don't sit exactly on top of each other
* **A different floor, or a different discipline** — the copies keep their original position, so a space program lines up with the same plan geometry

The clipboard survives a paste, so you can copy once and paste onto several floors in turn. Clear it with (≡) → **Edit** → **Clear Clipboard**.

> Copy and paste is unavailable in the Topology view. Switch to Canvas or Data view first.

## Clone a whole discipline

When a discipline is empty and another one already has the full program, clone it rather than copying by hand.

1. Switch to the discipline you want to fill.
2. Open (≡) → **File** → **Import** → **Clone Spaces**.
3. Turn on the discipline you want to copy from. Each option shows how many spaces it holds, and you can pick one source at a time.
4. Select **Add Spaces**.

The cloned spaces are created in the current discipline and left selected, so you can see what arrived.

> **Clone Spaces** is unavailable when no other discipline has any spaces.

## What carries over

Cloning and cross-discipline pasting copy the space data that isn't tied to a discipline:

* Space name — with a number appended if the name is already in use
* Space type
* Floor assignment
* Geometry and floor area
* Floor-to-floor and floor-to-ceiling heights
* Occupiable, condition type, and exterior flags

Discipline-specific engineering data does not transfer. Mechanical densities and loads, electrical power densities and special loads, and plumbing fixtures all start from the target discipline's own defaults — so a mechanical space cloned into plumbing arrives with no fixtures, and a space cloned into mechanical picks up the basis-of-design densities for its space type.

## Undoing

Both actions are single steps in the undo history. `Ctrl + Z` removes the pasted or cloned spaces.
